All these years, reality television has existed, making waves for all the wrong reasons, with no significant purpose or aim. However, at a time when only Television Rating Points (TRPs) matter, there is one show that has redefined modern reality television. Using volunteers from across America as the principal characters, ‘The Colony’, a new reality show on The Discovery Channel has won critical acclaim and rave reviews for its practical view of everything that is around us. Based on a post-apocalyptic theme, ‘The Colony’ couldn’t have come at a better time. There is a greater focus on renewable sources of energy in ‘The Colony’, and it leaves the viewer completely in awe.

New experimental show from Discovery

Although ‘The Colony’ has been classified as a reality show, it really is not. It is more of an experiment that aims to study the reaction of people to a potentially disastrous viral pandemic outbreak, and how people come to terms with the aftermath of the disaster. The experiment is based in Los Angeles, California. Until now, five episodes have been aired, and each one of them deals with the basic components required for survival.

Initially, ‘The Colony’ starts off with only six volunteers, who are kept awake for about three days with little food and water. Then, they are given fifteen minutes in a department store to find and carry as many tools and resources that they can find. Soon enough, marauders and robbers are sent to rob these volunteers of their supplies. After that, the volunteers drag their supplies down the Los Angeles River for about ten miles, before they arrive at their ‘sanctuary’; an abandoned 80,000 square foot warehouse.

This warehouse contains some basic tools, used batteries and a lot of useful stuff along with small quantities of food and water. The actual experiment starts right here, and the volunteers can survive only if they use their resources efficiently and effectively.

There’s a little MacGyver in each of us. And if you top this with a need do save some money or a certain eco-friendliness, than you might find yourself tinkering a solar panel or wind generator quite soon. You might need a guide, and this review is trying to find out if Do It Yourself Green Energy eBook (available at diy green energy) is capable of helping you in that way.

After a short introduction presenting you with the reasons why you might want to switch to alternative off-grid sources of electricity and the savings you might gain, the book takes you through the processes of building a solar panel, a wind generator, the power generating system and the basics of Biodiesel production.

But let’s pause on the introduction itself for a few seconds and let me quote the author of this e-book: “Adjust your thermostat. In the winter, set it at 68 – 70ºF when you’re home, and 62ºF when you’re away or in bed. In the summer, set it to 74-76ºF when you are home and 82ºF when you are away.” Now, it might all be about preferences, but that sounds at least a bit odd. Why would I want to over-heat my home in the summer while I’m away? Sources argue about these values, as the best temperature for comfort should be around 78ºF. The author is clearly aiming for that temperature by leveling it with home/away temperature differences. But this mostly depends on your A/C and its properties. You might end up consuming a lot more by trying to obtain the best temperature as an average rather than directly. Please note that setting the temperature in your habitat has also a lot to do with your body’s preferences and your health.

The next chapter deals with the way you can build a solar panel right in your back yard, starting from scratch: how to choose the cells, how to wire them together, and how to frame the entire ensemble. Unfortunately, the author fails to show the real costs of setting a solar panel based energy generator, as he clearly states that home wiring itself should be done by a professional. Depending on your home and the existing wiring system, this part might boost your investments pretty much.

Also, the author simply jumps from building the solar panel to the next chapter, which deals with wind generated energy. He forgets to tell how to set the panels themselves so they can indeed be efficient! He says nothing about the angles, when to change the angles, and how to protect and maintain the solar cells periodically. If not careful, you might find yourself the owner of a solar panel array that barely captures enough solar energy to light a bulb. Read the rest of this entry »

Getting strucked by lightning

Every now and then I’m struck with a moment of inspiration. Sometimes it’s productive, forward-thinking and important, but more often it’s just a little weird. When I’m playing with all my homemade electricity generating gadgets, I always seem to think up the weirdest scenarios and questions. This brings me to my most recent one: How much electricity can the human body take?

Obviously I want to know how much it can take pre-death. I’m not talking about tasing a body and recording the results. That’s no fun, just slightly psychotic and disturbing. I’ve always wondered how much electricity it takes to push a human over the barrier. I know this is a little out of my element but I still think it’s interesting to see how an alternator works.

The name alternator is derived from the term AC which is an abbreviation of alternative current. An alternator is one of the three major parts of a charging system in a vehicle which produces power for the electrical components like the instrument panel, lights on the interior as well as the exterior of the car, radio, air conditioner etc. have you ever wondered how the alternator works and how does it produce electricity? You may be thinking that the buttery is giving all the necessary powers to run all the electrical components in your vehicle. This is absolutely true but in reality the necessary power comes from the gas tank of your vehicle. An alternator is the link between your gas tank and the battery of your vehicle.

Magnetic Power Generator

Free energy? If you’d told me I could get it a year ago, I would have probably laughed at your face and told you to get lost. But now….I’m a believer. Around 14 months ago, one of my friends told me about this great magnetic free energy generator he’d bought off the Internet. He lived in another state so I had no idea if he was fibbing or not. I still wasn’t convinced when he sent me his electricity bill, which was shockingly low. My brain still told me he was pulling my leg. So he gave me the link to the Magnetic Power Generator website. I was still debating whether to get it or not till I saw the 60 day money back guarantee and I thought, “Why the heck not?”.

I paid the money on the spot, and within minutes, I had in my inbox a fifty page copy of the Do It Yourself guide. I still had a foreboding at this point mind you, as I wasn’t really sure how I’d actually go around building this generator. Sure, its all good when you have professionals come and set up equipment at your home, but this was a totally different ballgame altogether: I’d have to build this myself. I set aside a weekend for building the free energy generator and when I actually got down to building it, I found it wasn’t all that tough at all.

The materials required, firstly, were quite easily obtained. It’s what you’d find in almost every hardware store around the corner. The tools too where quite common and probably something you had worked with before doing odd jobs around the house. Screwdrivers, drill, saw, nuts and bolts and you had most of the stuff you needed to get started. Assembly was quite simple due to the step by step instructions in the manual. The instructions were excellent- simple, clear, concise and very easy to follow. As an added bonus, they’d even predicted what problems you might encounter, and had fixes for that too! Though I’m not too technically endowed, I had no problems at all getting the job done and even a complete novice at such jobs would complete it in his sleep. The time required, though not very short, was well worth the effort in the end.

How does lemon juice conduct electricity ?

Well that’s a question many asks.
A battery made out of a lemon is a gimmick used in various textbooks in schools all over the world.
The experiment usually consist of using two various metal conductors, it could be a nail covered with zinc (galvanized) and a quarter or any other
coin made out of copper. You will then have to insert the two items into the lemon. The coin and the nail will become electrodes and cause a kind of electrochemical reaction
and generate a minor electric potential. The reason for caring out experiments like this is to demonstrate for the pupils or students how a normal day battery works. When the lemon battery is put
together, a device called a multimeter will be able to the amount of voltage generated. To create a more convincing experiment, it’s possible to add more lemon batteries and produce enough current for a LED.
